Join us for the delightful flavors of Puerto Rican cuisine presented by the Puerto Rico Café in Habeeb Square. Puerto Rican cuisine is sometimes known as cocina criolla, because of the blending of the foods of immigrants to Puerto Rico. The aroma that wafts from kitchens throughout Puerto Rico comes from adobo and sofrito—blends of herbs and spices that give many of the native foods their distinctive taste and color. Adobo, made by crushing together peppercorns, oregano, garlic, salt, olive oil and lime juice or vinegar, is rubbed into meats before they are roasted. Sofrito, a potpourri of onions, garlic and peppers browned in either olive oil or lard and colored with achiote (annatto seeds), imparts the bright yellow color to the island's rice, soups and stews.

The City of Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department’s Cultural Services invites you to attend this cooking demonstration Wednesday, April 11, 2007 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00noon, held in the Galván House in HeritagePark. Cost is $7 per person and includes the demonstration, recipes and food samples. Reservations are requested as seating is limited; call 361-826-3410 to reserve space.

The Cultural Center is located in the beautifully restored Galván House in Heritage Park at 1581 N. Chaparral. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 9am – 5pm, Friday 9am – 2pm, Saturday 11am – 2pm.
