February 12, 2007 Corpus Christi, Texas – Today, local business leader, James Duerr placed his name on the ballot for City Council District 4. Mr Duerr was the only candidate that gathered signatures to put his name on the ballot rather than paying the $100 filing fee. Mr. Duerr states, “I felt that it was important to be supported by the Citizens of District 4, rather than paying the filing fee. With gathering more than three times the required signatures, I wanted to set the tone for a campaign where I work for the best interest of the Citizens of District 4.
Duerr, a small business owner, announced his goals for City Council at his January 29th announcement at City Hall which was attended by over 175 supporters. At this announcement, Mr Duerr stated the following goals to improve the safety and economic development of our City:
1-Public Safety
James wants to add a total of 50 new police officers over the next five years. He also strongly supports renewal of the Crime Control & Prevention District.
2-Economic development
Our human capital is the key to economic development. We need to expand Texas A&M University and the skills training program at Del Mar College. High paying jobs will follow an educated work force. Early public involvement in ongoing projects will assure the success of many needed additions to our city's tax base.
3-Fiscally responsible City
We must run our City like a business and focus on basic services such as street repair.
As a Native of Corpus Christi, Mr Duerr has been considering this campaign for a long time, and as preparation he has served on the City of Corpus Christi Committee for Persons with Disabilities and has been a member of several boards including the Volunteer Center of the Coastal Bend and the San Patricio Economic Development Corporation.
Mr Duerr is a graduate of Leadership Corpus Christi, the City of Corpus Christi Citizen University and Citizen's Police Academy. As such, he has a good understanding of the way our city government works and a desire to work with the City and its Citizens to find solutions to our problems.
Duerr, 45, is an Engineering graduate of Texas A&M University College Station. He is married to local physician Pamela Hall and they have a son at Baker Middle School and a daughter at Ray High School. Additional details can be found at
